Joyce Marie,
Skin care therapist/owner, Joyce Marie of Beverly Hills
With 26 years in the skin care industry under her belt, Joyce Marie couldn’t be more thrilled to reclaim her childhood. “I read that everyone should do what they loved to do when they were five years old. I loved to play with make-up and sing, so I’m living out my natural passions.”
After graduating from The Dermal Institute in her early 20’s, Marie focused on her career and let her love of singing and performing slide for almost 20 years. She feels blessed to be successful with her own business, but six years ago she realized that hard work must be balanced with outside interests in order for her to be her best in and out of the treatment room. “I had a chance meeting with a Brazilian bass player who encouraged me to start singing again. I had always liked Latin and Bossa Nova music, so I decided to go for it,” she recalls.
Not only did she associate herself with some of industry’s best musicians, she went back to school to study Portuguese and quickly became a favorite in Los Angeles for American and Brazilian jazz performances. “During the day I’m in my lab coat, but evening performances I’m total glamour girl. It’s a truly feminine expression that I thrive on.”
Marie believes more estheticians should be self-expressive outside the office. “Having a passion lets you take care of yourself and therefore better care of your clients. No one should be one-dimensional. We must feed our souls too.”
“Only passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to great things.”
-Denis Diderot, Pensees Philosphiques, 1746
